When Grandiose Thinking etc. is a Compensation or feelings of Unworthiness etc.: the impact of conventional thinking

Dear all,

We often wonder whether a certain proportion of individuals sink into a state of low-functioning (negative symptoms), which are apparently intractable and, in many cases, worsen of over time. I wonder whether the conventional treatment—although it may seem necessary at times—tends to reinforce the psychosis and low-functioning. Thus, our institutionalized patients (hospital, structured residences) are subjected to a high level of social control and are generally regarded as too incompetent to find a place in society. This treatment regimen would seem to enhance the individual’s negative self-image (unacceptable, incompetent, reprehensible, etc.). Thus, stifle initiative and productivity, and foster withdrawal from a noxious atmosphere.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this or possibly with examples from your experience. Otherwise, simply indicate agree or disagree, or qualified agreement/disagreement.
